    NASA discovers 10,000th near-Earth object


    More than 10,000 asteroids and comets that can pass near Earth have now been discovered. The 10,000th near-Earth object, asteroid 2013 MZ5, was first detected on the night of June 18, 2013, by the Pan-STARRS-1 telescope, located on the 10,000-foot (3,000-meter) summit of the Haleakala crater on Maui. Managed by the University of Hawaii, the PanSTARRS survey receives NASA funding.
    Ninety-eight percent of all near-Earth objects discovered were first detected by NASA-supported surveys.
    “Finding 10,000 near-Earth objects is a significant milestone,” said Lindley Johnson, program executive for NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observations Program at NASA Headquarters, Washington. “But there are at least 10 times that many more to be found before we can be assured we will have found any and all that could impact and do significant harm to the citizens of Earth.” During Johnson’s decade-long tenure, 76 percent of the NEO discoveries have been made.
    Near-Earth objects (NEOs) are asteroids and comets that can approach the Earth’s orbital distance to within about 28 million miles (45 million kilometers). They range in size from as small as a few feet to as large as 25 miles (41 kilometers) for the largest near-Earth asteroid, 1036 Ganymed.
    Asteroid 2013 MZ5 is approximately 1,000 feet (300 meters) across. Its orbit is well understood and will not approach close enough to Earth to be considered potentially hazardous.
    “The first near-Earth object was discovered in 1898,” said Don Yeomans, long-time manager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. “Over the next hundred years, only about 500 had been found. But then, with the advent of NASA’s NEO Observations program in 1998, we’ve been racking them up ever since. And with new, more capable systems coming on line, we are learning even more about where the NEOs are currently in our solar system, and where they will be in the future.”
    Of the 10,000 discoveries, roughly 10 percent are larger than six-tenths of a mile (one kilometer) in size – roughly the size that could produce global consequences should one impact the Earth. However, the NASA NEOO program has found that none of these larger NEOs currently pose an impact threat and probably only a few dozen more of these large NEOs remain undiscovered.
    The vast majority of NEOs are smaller than one kilometer, with the number of objects of a particular size increasing as their sizes decrease. For example, there are expected to be about 15,000 NEOs that are about one-and-half football fields in size (460 feet, or 140 meters), and more than a million that are about one-third a football field in size (100 feet, or 30 meters). A NEO hitting Earth would need to be about 100 feet (30 meters) or larger to cause significant devastation in populated areas. Almost 30 percent of the 460-foot-sized NEOs have been found, but less than 1 percent of the 100-foot-sized NEOs have been detected.
    When it originated, the NASA-instituted Near-Earth Object Observations Program provided support to search programs run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory (LINEAR); the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NEAT); the University of Arizona (Spacewatch, and later Catalina Sky Survey) and the Lowell Observatory (LONEOS). All these search teams report their observations to the Minor Planet Center, the central node where all observations from observatories worldwide are correlated with objects, and they are given unique designations and their orbits are calculated.
    “When I began surveying for asteroids and comets in 1992, a near-Earth object discovery was a rare event,” said Tim Spahr, director of the Minor Planet Center. “These days we average three NEO discoveries a day, and each month the Minor Planet Center receives hundreds of thousands of observations on asteroids, including those in the main-belt. The work done by the NASA surveys, and the other international professional and amateur astronomers, to discover and track NEOs is really remarkable.”

    History of Aviation - The Height of Human Imagination


    If there is one word that is constantly being proved wrong throughout history, it is the word 'impossible'. Whenever a human mind thinks of something that has never been done before, there are always a number of people present to say that it is not possible. Yet, from time to time, human intelligence has proved its superiority over human reasoning. Man has been able to achieve nearly everything that a mind is able to imagine. The best example in this aspect is aviation. From the earliest endeavor of flying via huge birds' wings to the unrevealed secret flying machine in military bases, there is a plethora of moments which added a new wing in the flight of technological advancements. Moreover, the fantasy of flying was not only limited to a certain class. Today, everyone can enjoy the flight as well as flying. Enthusiasts can choose to be air force pilots or commercial pilots. Many training centers and schools are offering training such as floatplane training and float endorsement for leisure flyers.
    Aviation perhaps is one of the most amazing marvels, yet it is also a very common mean of transportation. It is really interesting to see how this unbelievable achievement turned into the business that it is today.
    Supposedly, the very first successful attempt of making an object fly was the kite which was invented in China during 200BC. However, a very ancient myth Greek of Deadlus is also considered to be taken from a real incident. It is said that Deadlus tried to imitate the flight of bird by using wax to stick large wings to his body. The authenticity of this myth is debatable, yet it clearly does define man's wish to fly from the earliest of civilization.
    Even after such failed endeavors, a nearly successful attempt of flying is said to be of around the ninth century. A Berber man took a short flight on his gliding machine and landed back to that point. This can possibly be the earliest glider, but the landing was more of a crash. The first recorded and credible event of such flight is found in year 1010th when an English monk Eilmer of Malmesbury flew about 200 meters in his glider.
    In the 18th century, it was Leonardo Da Vinci who created designs and illustrations that are said to be the major inspiration for what we see as modern aviation. Da Vinci himself was a great believer in human's ability to fly in flying machines. He designed many machines which very much resemble the airplanes and helicopters that we see today.
    The first modern flight was of Jean-Francois and Francois Laurent in a hot air balloon. The concept of hot air flight was nearly a century old, but it was in 1783 when these two gentlemen took the flight. The balloon later was enhanced as a steerable airship by Henri Giffard in 1852.
    Not much later in 1884, the French army made the first ever electric powered airship. The Airships were based on the "lighter than air" theory, which suggested that an object lighter than air can float on the air like a ship on water. This was successfully achieved by heating the air, yet the airships were short lived and fragile. The new century brought a newer concept that was heavier than air flight, but that is a whole new chapter in history of aviation.

    Chinese telecom giant Huawei has launched in London on Tuesday a new "smart phone" presented as the finest in the world, to compete with high-end models of its rivals Apple and Samsung in foreign markets.

    The setting for the launch of the new smartphoneHuawei date, 18/06, owes nothing to chance. This is a nod to the thickness of the phone to 6.18 mm. To launch outside of China, its traditional base, the Group has chosen to unveil its Ascend P6 at the Roundhouse in London, famous room for hosting concerts Jimy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

    "Our goal is to provide better products, more innovative products, with a better design," said Richard Yu, general manager of the group. The Ascend P6, which weighs 120 grams and has a touch screen of 119.5 millimeters, will be sold at a suggested retail price of 449 euros (600 dollars). It will be available in 19 countries by the end of July, including China, France, Germany and Italy, before being distributed in a hundred other later.

    Equipment used for spying?

    Huawei began as telecommunications equipment provider before embarking on the mobile phone in the last three years. Founded by a former engineer of the Chinese army, the group has been at the center of controversy between Beijing and Washington over the security of its computer equipment, because of his alleged links with the Chinese government.

    The U.S. Congress last year asked that the group be excluded from public contracts, arguing that its equipment could be used for espionage by China. Huawei has denied these claims, finding they fell protectionism.
